Though few Indianapolis dancers can recall a time when Kinney Dancewear didn't meet their dancing needs, Frank Kinney opened the retail establishment in 1952 as Kinney Department Store. The New York street location supplied the eastside neighborhood with men's, women's and children's clothing, serving supplies, greeting cards and various other odds and ends. In 1960, when a dance studio down the street urged Mr. Kinney to carry a few leotards and ballet slippers, he happily obliged. Word spread quickly, and by 1976, when Mr. Kinney moved the store to its present location and renamed it Kinney Dancewear, business was booming. Within a few years, Kinney Dancewear was shipping dancewear supplies all over the state, and the nation. Upon his retirement in 1988, Frank Kinney's son and daughter, Jeff Kinney and Jan Dunkelbarger, took over the store and continued to help Kinney Dancewear become one of the larges dance retailers in the country.
In 2000, Kinney Dancewear expanded their services to the web, and opened a second location in Louisville, Kentucky in the summer of 2001. For some families, shopping at Kinney Dancewear for that very first pair of ballet slippers has become tradition, as we are honored to have served three generations of dancers. Today Kinney Dancewear services all ages, sizes and types of dancers from the tiniest budding ballerina to professional ballet companies, theme parks, high school and college choirs, drill teams and dance teams and the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders and the Indiana Pacer Pacemates. We pride ourselves on our large and varied inventory, but especially on our unbeatable customer service. Our knowledgeable and friendly sales staff, all former dancers themselves, work tirelessly to ensure that you receive exactly what you need when you need it, even if you come to us unsure about which product best suits your unique needs. Expect nothing less than the best from Kinney Dancewear.
